Bordered on the west by the mighty Mississippi River, St. Clair County was the first county established in Illinois. It is named after Arthur St. Clair who established the county in the Northwest Passage before the state of Illinois even existed. Belleville is the county seat, while other cities included here are O´Fallon, Fairview Heights, Freeburg, Lebanon, Mascoutah, Millstadt, New Baden, Shiloh, Smithton, and Swansea. St. Clair supports many types of lifestyles from metropolitan to small town living. It offers the conveniences of the MetroLink light rail system and the Mid-America St. Louis Airport while offering the employment opportunities of the state Healthcare system and local Air Base.
